Adolescent DMDD Treatment at Silver State
Understanding DMDD in Adolescents
Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) is a childhood mood condition characterized by severe, recurrent temper outbursts grossly out of proportion to the situation, occurring three or more times per week, along with a chronically angry or irritable baseline mood between episodes according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Silver State helps teens ages 11–17 who experience these persistent mood disruptions that affect every area of their life.
DMDD is a relatively recent diagnostic category that was introduced to address the frequent misdiagnosis of children with chronic irritability as having bipolar disorder. While DMDD shares some features with bipolar disorder, the two conditions are distinct: DMDD involves a persistent angry mood rather than episodic mood cycling, and treatment approaches differ significantly.
Without treatment, DMDD significantly increases the risk of developing depression and anxiety disorders in adolescence and adulthood. The condition also strains family relationships, disrupts school functioning, and can lead to social isolation as peers and teachers struggle to manage the teen's emotional intensity. Research shows that early, targeted intervention can help teens develop the regulation skills they need.
At our Las Vegas treatment center, Silver State's clinical team understands that DMDD is not willful misbehavior — it reflects genuine difficulty regulating emotions that can be effectively treated with the right combination of therapy, skill-building, and family involvement.

Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches

How Silver State Treats DMDD
Silver State's DMDD treatment prioritizes emotional regulation skill-building in a structured, predictable environment. Within our residential program, teens learn to identify emotional triggers, develop distress tolerance techniques, and practice healthier responses. Our 4:1 staff-to-client ratio provides the consistent support needed during emotional crises, and our structured daily routine minimizes unexpected triggers while building tolerance for frustration.
Family therapy teaches parents de-escalation strategies and reinforces skills learned in treatment. We help families break the cycle of reactive responses that can inadvertently escalate DMDD outbursts, replacing them with calm, consistent approaches that support emotional regulation. Our discharge planning ensures teens have adequate support as they transition home, with outpatient referrals to continue building independence in managing their emotions.
